Ideas Update and Inspiration

My idea:

My trailer will follow the journey of a teenage girl learning to cope with the death of her boyfriend, surrounding herself with friends who tell her its time she got back out there and finds someone new. This is where the cliche turns around. She visits her boyfriends memorial bench every week and leaves him a note, one day she finds someone sat there, as the two speak the protagonist begins to see who appears to be her dead boyfriend walking past them but he vanishes before she can get her head around what she has just seen.

as time goes on, she begins to see her dead boyfriend more frequently, and it begins to become clear that he is not a guardian angel there to protect her. She meets the guy from the bench for a coffee date and she sees him walk past them again. this time she follows. Finding herself on a quiet back street he appears to her again and embraces her. He manipulates her thoughts about how she really felt about him to guilt her into not seeing other people, and controls her actions by playing the devil sat on her shoulder. Until one day she snaps.

Magazine ideas:

Create your own user feedback survey

For my magazine I wanted my audience to influence what I create. So the design of my magazine will be based on what my audience want to see.

Poster ideas and inspirations:

For my poster, I want my audience to be enticed by my characters and the relationship between them. I also want to tease my audience away from the psychological thriller genre through the poster similar to the way in which the Deadpool poster teased towards a romantic genre instead of the superhero genre. I feel that if I tease my film in a similar way I may attract a wider audience to it.

I plan on featuring my main two characters on my poster, creating and effect which looks like multiple photos of the two together piled on top of each other, creating the romantic ideas of the couple but also portraying the theme of memories which will tease the idea of the death of the characters boyfriend.

Trailer ideas and inspirations:

Shutter Island

I found inspiration within the trailer for Scorsese's Shutter Island (2010) with the use of split second shots which appear as flashbacks of the protagonists family. the quick appearances adding to the fast pace of the trailer creates suspense within the audience. I may use fast cuts while editing my trailer to create the tension surrounding the narrative climax of my story.

The Gift

Within this trailer all on screen text is saved until towards the end of the trailer to help effectively build suspense within the trailer. I may take inspiration from this trailer and try to keep my on screen text to a minimal within my trailer and find a moment in my trailer where I can effectively build the most suspense with the combination of on screen text and filmed footage.

Synergistic Marketing Research

Eddie the Eagle (Fletcher, 2016)

The colour scheme for Eddie the Eagle consists only of primary colours. The use of the red blue and yellow contrast each other enough to allow each aspect of the DVD cover to stand out to the audience but also do not draw all of the audiences attention to one part of the image, the audience get to see every part equally. On the DVD cover, the cast names and the tagline "inspired by a dream come true" is positioned on top of the clouds in the main image. This could be representative of how people see dreams and aspirations as "up in the clouds".

The poster uses the same image as that which appears on the DVD cover, including the same primary colour scheme. The poster however does not include the cast names or the same tagline as on the DVD cover. The poster itself is minimalist, consisting of one main image and minimal text of a simple font. By using the same image on the DVD cover, the audience are shown a comical and humourous insight to the characters personality.
These two screenshots from the trailer emphasise the focus on primary colours throughout the film. The on screen text include puns related to the content of the movie. "always aim high" and "landing 2016" give humour and context to the film. The colour scheme which is presented through the DVD cover and the poster is also shown clearly within the trailer. The on screen text appears on a blue background showing the sky, emphasising the idea of dreams and tranquillity.

The cinematography within the trailer also shows the focus of primary colours which fill the choices in costuming. The colour scheme may also be seen as "quirky" which may also be how people the main character's behaviour and lines of dialogue.

Into the Wild (Penn, 2007)

The poster for this film is simplistic in its design, leaving a large amount of open space above and around the films title and the main character.  This open space may be representative of the freedom which is thematically presented throughout this film. The colour scheme on this poster consists of faded and dark colours, creating a peaceful atmosphere on the poster. Unconventionally, the cast names on this poster are all listed towards the right hand side of the poster instead of across the top, making the most of the sky in the background of the image.

On the DVD cover, the same image is used that is used on the poster. The title of the film is positioned towards the top right hand corner of the image, to keep the emphasis of the open space around the protagonist. This emphasis is also included within the main image on the reverse side of the DVD cover. the open framing of the images hints towards the sense of freedom which is presented throughout the film.

The open framing within the trailer is also used to the advantage of the onscreen text. The onscreen text says "take a journey" and is positioned just above a mountain landscape, a place known for appealing to adventurers. The trailer highlights similar washed out colours as featured on both the poster and the DVD cover. The open framing within the trailer is also used to bring attention to the wide and open landscapes which are made to appeal to the audience.

Magazines and Audience Appeal

During the promotion of a film, having the film featuring within film magazines such as Empire or Total Film gives the film an additional opportunity for marketing. magazines may review or promote a multitude of films within one copy of a magazine, possibly boosting the excitement of the film within the magazines audience. Although trailers show the audience elements of the films, reviews within printed media such as magazines give the audience the opinion of how other audience members perceived the film.

These images are of a series of double page spreads featured within Total Film and a Deadpool feature within the magazine. The use of the different images show the audience a representation of the different moments within the film, some of which evoking emotion.

Image 2
Image 1 is the first page of the magazines Deadpool feature. the headline states "Holding out for an antihero" giving a twist to a well known lyric. All text on this page is positioned on top of an action-packed image from the film, with the main protagonist positioned entirely on one page without any other characters, showing the importance of this character.

The second image begins to show the audience the other characters within the film. Other areas of text such as drop quotes and sub headings are featured in a red font on a black background. This colour scheme fits in with the general colour scheme of the film itself. Within the images on this double page the audience can see the different relationships the protagonist has with the other characters within the film as a team or in a romantic relationship.
